January 11, 2021 Maharashtra has become the eighth state to confirm bird flu. As per test results, avian flu has been confirmed as the cause of death of 800 chickens in Parbhani district of Maharashtra.

Abird-flu outbreak has been confirmed in Maharashtra with test results showing that 800 chickens died of the flu at Murumba village in Parbhani district.

With this, Maharashtra has become the eighth state to confirm bird flu.

Samples collected from Maharashtra were sent for testing to confirm if the deaths of birds in the state were a result of the outbreak or not.

Deepak Mughlikar, District Collector, Parbhani told news agency ANI on Monday, “Three days ago, 800 chickens in Murumba village died due to bird flu. District administration had sent blood samples of dead chickens to National Laboratory. Reports confirm that the chickens died of bird flu.”

On Sunday, 11 crows were found dead in Mumbai’s Chembur area. A team of doctors and BMC officials reached the spot to examine the incident. Carcasses were sent to Pune for examination.

BMC officials said the reason for the death of the crows is yet to be determined.

An “alert zone” was earlier declared in a 10-kilometre radius around the Ahmedpur area in Maharashtra’s Latur after 180 birds, including 128 hens, were found dead over the last couple of days, an official said.

The “alert zone” has been marked as a precautionary measure around Kendrewadi village, around 265 kilometres from Aurangabad, he said.

According to a Latur district administration release, the alert zone norms mandate that no vehicle will enter or leave the place and the transportation of poultry, birds, animals, feed, manure etc. will be prohibited.

Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have already confirmed a bird-flu outbreak, following which the central government has put in place precautionary measures to identify and isolate any cases of avian influenza.

The government has also directed zoo managements to submit daily reports to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) till their area is declared free from the disease.

In Delhi, 17 ducks were found dead at the Sanjay Lake, prompting authorities to declare it an “alert zone”.

This came a day after the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) closed the famous water body-cum-park following the death of 10 ducks on the premises. The samples from the dead ducks were sent for testing.

Besides, 91 crows have been found dead in 14 DDA parks in the last few days, officials said.

In Himachal, carcasses of 215 migratory birds were found in the Pong Dam Wildlife Sanctuary, taking the total number of such birds suspected to have died of avian influenza to 4,235.

Over 400 birds, mostly crows, were found dead in different parts of Rajasthan.

Bird flu cases have so far been confirmed in 13 Madhya Pradesh districts, while around 1,100 crows and other wild birds have been found dead across 27 districts since the virus was first detected in the state last month, an official said.
